Luna the wolf Hybrid!

Our little puppy Luna was born on the 3rd of December 2010.

The father is Corvus a 50% czech wolf dog hybrid, the mother is Storm a 50% Saarloos wolfhound hybrid.

I have never owned a Wolf Hybrid before and thought it would be interesting to start this blog on my (Ash) and my girlfriends (Antonella) journey on raising this gorgeous breed of dog? if that is what you can call it.

We have not picked up the puppy yet.....! she will be 7 weeks old on Friday 21st of January and this is when we will be embarking cross country from South Wales to Boston Lincolnshire, to pick her up.

Here is a little info on the breed for anybody interested in the wolf Hybrid.

Czechoslovakin wolf dog
In 1955 an experiment took place in the CSSR, the crossing of a German shepherd dog with a Carpathian Wolf. The experiment established that the offspring from the mating of a male dog to a female wolf as well as that of male wolf to a female dog, could be reared. The overwhelming majority of the products of these matings possessed the genetic requirements for continuation of breeding. In 1965, after the end of the experiment, a plan for the breeding of this new breed was worked out. This was to combinr the usabelqualities of the wolf with the favourable qualities of the dog. In 1982 the Czechoslovakian Wolfdog, through the general commitee of the breeder's associations of the CSSR of that time, was recognized as a national breed.
saarloos wolf dog
In 1921, Leendert Saarloos started a program of crossbreeding a German Shepherd dog male to a female Eurasian Wolf. His aim was to produce a healthier version of the German Shepherd dog which was immune to distemper, the saarloos Wolfdog we know is a strong imposing dog, but they kept their wolflike characteristics; they are cautious, reserved and lack the ferocity to attack. Until he died in 1969 Lendert Saarloos was in full control over the breeding of hi "European wolfdog". After his death his death his wife and daughter took over and caried on his work. The dutch Kennel Club recognized the breed in !975. o honour its creator they changed the name to "sarloos wolfdog". In 1981 the breed was recognised by the Federation cynologique Internationale (FCI). In the past, Some saarloos wolfdogs were trained as guide dogs for the blind and as rescue dogs

Northern inuit
In the 1980's several Inuit/Husky type dogs were imported into the UK and a small number of these progeny were selectively bred for type and size with other northern breeds, such as Malamute, Husky and the german shepherd dog (for trainability). Ultimately, a bred with a wolfish appearance and passive temperment was created by selectively breeding over several generations which has culminated in the Northern Inuit dog of today. In the early years a handful of other dogs (from these same core breeds) were brought into the breeding programme to improve the breed by expanding the gene pool and setting certain characteristics. For many generations now the Northern Inuit dog has been bred pure, Inuit dog to Inuit dog, and a definite type has been established. A breeding programme has been developed to improve the health and expand the gene pool of these dogs in order to ensure the vitality of the breed in the future.

  1. Beautiful Wolf-Hybrid!! Remember their facial markings will change until a year old + She'll always have that cute dark patch on the top (hopefully) and she might get more white to emphasize the face. Very cute!

Make sure to go hog crazy on the photos in the first 6 months. I took insane amounts of photos, cut back (because I was afraid of becoming the crazy "first time mother" that takes 20 pictures of her first child drooling or something equally nutty), and now regret that I don't have more of her from that age. They grow up too fast.

If you and your girlfriend don't already have children this will be a view of some VERY related methods of dealing with this breed. Although, myself, I haven't had children... I can only imagine from being around enough/babysitting my fair share.

The breed is SO smart but the real key is to always have your dog around you when you're home from work (even if she's in her kennel), so that she's your pack member. Socialize her LOTS when she's 3 months + (not too young because you don't want everyone's dirty hands touching a puppy too young). Jason and I lived 30 mins outside of town, a lot of our friends didn't want to drive that far to come see us so one regret is that we didn't socialize Tundra as much as we would have liked to.

On the other hand, she's a lot more protective of us, a lot more attached to a small handful of people who did come around(which can be viewed as a good thing). But if Jason and I wanted to go on vacation it makes it a lot more difficult to find someone to look after her.

Decide before hand with your girlfriend what rules are you going to have for things like the dog sleeping on the bed, jumping up on couches, kennel training/ verses not (I do NOT regret this!!), training.

Wolf-hybrids are smart, they can be trained very easily if done from a young age, its just a matter of figuring out between you and gf how to raise her.

J & I argued about Tundra jumping up on the couch whenever she wanted to. If you read my blog I think I ranted LOL. I don't agree with this behavior and now I wish I would have been more firm on this (too late to train her not to now). You will find you bend the rules on a lot of things for your new fur baby. Congrats! Hope you liked my advice 8-)

  2. Thanks for getting back to me....

we have a big family close by and most of them have dogs so i am sure she will have a lot of socialising. my grandparents have a 7 year old Black Lab and she (the lab) has raised most puppy within my family so hopefully Luna will get along fine with her, well she is a big softy.

living in the Brecon Beacons there a lot of farms and sheep and livestock around so i really hope to get her used to all this stuff early on so that she can be off the lead on walks and wont try killing anything....!

hope you like following my blog as i have read yours back to front over the last few days to get a heads up on this bread.
